Ossett Pictures - Ossett Ambulance 1934

Previous | Home | Next

A picture of the Borough of Ossett ambulance from about 1934. In those days there was only one ambulance for the town and patients were taken to Clayton Hospital in Wakefield or to the hospital in Dewsbury. The ambulance drivers were part-time and were called by telephone when needed.

The vehicle in the picture is being driven by (George) Austin Wilson (1893-1945) one of my grandfather's younger brothers. Austin was a metal turner for Ossett Gas Company also part-time fire engine driver and also a part-time ambulance driver.
