Bonfire at gedham Field in 1911

A huge bonfire was built at Gedham Field in Ossett to celebrate the coronation of King George V on the 22nd June 1911. In this picture there are a number of well-known Ossett worthies of the time.

The gentleman in the centre of the picture in the top hat is Thomas Wilby Bentley who lived at 'Elder House', Teal Street. He was mungo manufacturer and mayor of Ossett in the years 1909/10 and 1910/11, and so was mayor at the time of the photograph. He was also Chairman of Governors at Ossett Grammar School from 1905-1925.
