On the 3rd July 1890, Royal Assent was given to the Charter of Incorporation for Ossett to become a Borough and the precious document arrived at Ossett Station on the 16th August 1890. The streets were decorated and the celebrations included a large procession as the new charter was brought from Ossett station to the provisional Mayor, Mr. C.T. Philips. There was great rejoicing and feasting, and an assembly of 5,000 people finished off with fireworks at night made by Riley's Fireworks of Flushdyke.

Ossett lost its Borough status on the 1st April 1974 when it became part of Wakefield Metropolitan District and was from then on administered from Wakefield.
