Ossett Pictures - Steam Train at Ossett

The picture above is copyright Roger Hepworth and my thanks to him for permission to use the picture on this website. The caption in the book where this picture was first published, "Railway Memories No.6" by Chapman and Rose, reads as follows:

"Ossett  station at 8am on 11th. May 1963.  B1s 61189 Sir William Gray and 61240 Harry Hinchcliffe prepare to leave [actually arrive] with a London-bound special for the Rugby League cup final between Wakefield Trinity and Wigan as porter [Stafford] Wicks wheels a barrow across the island platform." 

Such trains ran most years – some leaving on a Friday night.

The spire of the Congregational Chapel can be seen in the background. By 1900, the main mode of transport for the town was the railway and over 100 trains per day passed through Ossett station.
