Tumbling Close

A picture by Anthony Oldroyd from the 1970s showing Tumbling Close, which was located just behind the (now closed down) garage on Towngate in Ossett. The warehouse style building in the centre of the picture is where hand loom weavers or possibly power loom wavers worked in a factory environment during the 19th century.

Above the three doors at roof level would be a hoist to bring in woollen material in for the weavers to work with and to get finished rolls of cloth into awaiting horse-drawn transport for onward shipment to the cloth markets. The buildings have now been demolished. Tumbling Close still exists today, but these buildings have been replaced with more modern semi-detached bungalows and houses.
