South Parade Chapel in 1907

Old Wesleyan Chapel at St. Johns

Before the existing St. John's Wesleyan Chapel was built on South Parade in 1908, the earlier chapel (shown above) served the non-conformist worshippers in this part of Ossett. The old chapel was built circa 1846 and I think survived into the 1970s at least, before being demolished and replaced by houses.

John Goodchild in his "Ossett in Picture Postcards" book says this about St John's Wesleyan Chapel:

"The adjoining graveyard accommodates the elaborate stones and memorials of many of the opulent of Ossett and is well worth an investigatory visit."

Sadly, the graveyard is now in a very sorry state of disrepair and it isn't easy to get around the site.
