There are known to have been 26 coal mines in Ossett at one time or another and in 1927, Ossett had 1,500 men employed in the coal mining industry. The largest pit, in Ossett, dating back to the 19th Century, was Old Roundwood Colliery, which in 1960, produced over 166,000 tons of coal.

In 1966, Old Roundwood Colliery closed and its workforce was assimilated at other pits in the Yorkshire coalfield.
