ROGER THORNS

Roger Thorns was baptised at St. Peter’s, Horbury on the 25th August 1732. He was the son of Samuel Thorns. He married Ann Spur at St. Peter’s on the 23rd October 1757. I am unable to find any children they may have had. When Ann was buried on 6th April 1811, she was described as ‘widow of Roger Thorns, Yeoman’.

The verse on the gravestone reads:

"My long afflicted Husband dear,
Whoes gross material parts lie here,
At length has took his flight;
In Christ redeemed whoes Spirits pow(er?)
Hath savd him in the trying Hour,
Into a World of Light"

Maybe Roger had been ill for a long time?

Roger Thornes

The inscription reads:

"Sacred to the memory of Roger Thorns who died Jan 4th 1803 aged 70.

My long afflicted Husband dear,
Whoes gross material parts lie here,
At length has took his flight;
In Christ redeemed whoes Spirits pow(er?)
Hath savd him in the trying Hour,
Into a World of Light

Also of Ann wife of the above who died April 6th 1811 in the 76th year of her age."
